Welcome to the Ancient Greek Geek blog (a title suggested by my better half!)

This is the first post on a subject which has fascinated (obsessed??) me for many years; Ancient Greece, and, in particular, Ancients Wargaming. If you share my fascination, then I hope that this site will be of interest to you, and you may even feel inspired to contribute. 

I'll have various themes for the site, which I hope to expand upon in the future. Currently, these will include book reviews, wargaming in the ancient world (and impartial reviews of figures – when I can afford to buy them!), and commentaries on visits to ancient sites (usually meaning when we’ve been on holiday and I’ve nipped off for a day to see a local site of interest).

    Andy,
    Excellent start and I will be following this closely. Going to pick up a copy of Spartans and Successors tomorrow at Partizan they sound different for smaller games

Scenery - The Inn of the Prancing Peltast

Further to it's first appearance on the battlefield during our most recent battle (it was placed behind the Greek lines once the troops had moved forward enough), here are soon more photos of the recently-painted inn (or kapeleion ).  I had a lot of pleasure painting and basing this resin model.  I've had it at least 10-15 years, I think.  In fact, I may have bought it with Peninsular Wargaming in mind! Here's the inn sign - proof that it's a 'Prancing Peltast'! And here are the neighbouring vineyard and olive grove (more olive trees on order). Greek light cavalry hurry past the inn. Athenian hoplites take up position in front of the inn. There's a small barley/wheat field to follow in the future.  I am determined that the inn will be a self-sufficient business! Onomarchos versus Philip of Macedon

 Warhammer Ancient Battles (WAB) - Phocian Greek versus Rise of Macedon Army - September 2021 View from the Macedonian right flank.  Note the sacrificing priest. So...time for the return match. Philip of Macedon and his young, upstart son, Prince Alexander, were out to teach those impious, temple-robbing Phocians and their over-paid mercenaries a lesson! I've always liked the idea of a Phocian army (that, or a Syracusan) since my WRG 6th Edition days.  Here was a chance to actually use one (using the list from the Alexander the Great WAB supplement). Again, we opted for no scenery - just an open plain so that we could focus on learning the rules. DISASTER STRIKES! However, the night before I did something really, really stupid.  Doing production-line varnishing, I put a tray of freshly sprayed Phocian Epilektoi onto the top of the washing machine.  It hadn't clicked with me that the machine was on.  I left them there while it went through a spin cycle! Straw Dogs & Flaming Bulls

The inaugural meeting of the 'Old Berks' (Phil lives near Berkswell, so the name just suggested itself!) took place at Partizan three weeks before.  We all met last weekend to have our first game.   So, the historical context for the battle (and don't tell me this never happened): after India, the Macedonians with Greek mercenaries pushed on into China, and there they met - amongst other things - Straw Dogs and Flaming Bulls! John brought hordes (?) of excellent Chinese Warring States troops, which he and Steve commanded.   John, incidentally, is the author of the excellent WAB supplement, The Art of War (above).  Knowing very little about ancient Chinese armies, I have found this an instructive and entertaining read.  My opponent had no excuse for not knowing his troops.   But, John, you still haven't signed my copy!
